Week of September 24th-28th    

Our Reading story for the week is “Miss Bindergarten Takes A Trip With Kindergarten”. Our question of the week is: How do people in a community cooperate? The Amazing Words for this story are: bakery, park, library, fire station, post office, chaperone. The high frequency words are: the, little. The text based comprehension skill is classifying and categorizing. We will learn about hearing the beginning or initial sound for phonological awareness skills. We will identify the letters Tt-Zz. Please practice reading the “Am I Little?!” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math we will continue working on learning how to read, write, identify and count numbers 6-10. We will begin small group instruction and cooperatively work at Math Stations.

In Science and Social Studies, we learn about all things apples and Johnny Appleseed! This will be a fun week with hand on activities. J

Sight word testing for LIST 1 started last week! If there is a check by the sight word, your child read that word correctly. If the sight word is circled, then your child needs to work on that word. Be sure to take out, cut apart and practice recognizing the sight words that were placed in the first plastic sleeve of the daily folder. We will be working on words in school as well.

Week of September 17th-21st   

Our Reading story for the week is “Plaidypus Lost”. Our question of the week is: How do families cooperate? The Amazing Words for this story are: platypus, lost, market, around, found, groceries. The high frequency words are: the, little. The text based comprehension skill is sequence. We will learn about hearing the beginning or initial sound for phonological awareness skills. We will identify the letters Oo-Ss. Please practice reading the “Little Me!” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math we will begin working on learning how to read, write, identify and count numbers 6-10. Our Math rotations are really moving along nicely. We now know the expectations for voice levels and what to do at signals.  Please work on one to one correspondence with your child. This is counting an object and saying “one”, then moving to the next object and saying “two”.

In Science, we will continue our topic of The Nature of Science. We will learn about questions, observations, how to share what you observe, and safety.

In Social Studies, we will continue learning about what it means to be a good citizen. We will discuss rules in our classroom, school and community.

A yellow Field Trip Form was sent home on Friday. Please be sure to complete the front and back of this form and return it right away.

The Fall Festival Planning Committee has started planning the Kindergarten Fall Festival. The date of the Fall Festival is scheduled for Friday, October 26th. If you are interested in helping out and have all four clearances on file, please contact Kelly Logozzo at 570-933-1667. The next planning meeting will be held on Monday, Sept. 24th at Francesco’s Restaurant in Shenandoah at 7:00pm. Look for the note in today’s folder.

Week of September 10th-14th  

Our Reading story for the week is “We Are So Proud”. Our question of the week is: How do school children work and play together? The Amazing Words for this story are: proud, cooperation, float, preparation, creation, guide. The high frequency words are: I, am. The text based comprehension skill is setting. We will learn about syllables and review rhyming for phonological awareness skills. We will identify the letters Ff-Nn. Please practice reading the “Am I?” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math we will continue to learn signals, timers, and procedures that will help our guided Math small group time run smoothly. We will continue working on learning how to read, write, and count numbers up to five. Please work on one to one correspondence with your child. This is counting an object and saying “one”, then moving to the next object and saying “two”.

In Science, we will begin our topic of The Nature of Science. We will learn about questions, observations, how to share what you observe, and safety.

Upcoming important dates:
·         9/10 School Store Begins The school store will begin today. Kindergarten will shop on a Monday. Students do not need a lot of money for the store. Students must go to school store right away.
·         9/10 NSE PTO Meeting 6:30 It is $5.00 to join and you must have clearances in order to participate in school activities that occur during the year. Please visit the PTO Facebook Page at North Schuylkill Elementary PTO. It is typically updated weekly with important information.
·         9/12 Hearing Screenings for grades K-2
·         9/14 Picture Day Feel free to return the picture packet that was sent home Friday and I will keep it in the classroom. Students must follow the dress code for pictures. All students will get their picture taken.
·         9/20 District Bon Fire at 7:30
·         9/21NSE PAID Dress Down There is no longer a dress down on 9/14 due to pictures being taken.

Week of September 4th-7th

Our Reading story for the week was “The Little School Bus”. Our question of the week is: How do children get to school? The Amazing Words for this story are: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth. The high frequency words are: I, am. The text based comprehension skill we worked on was character. Rhyming was the phonological awareness skill. We worked on identifying the letters Aa-Ee. Please practice reading the “I Am” decodable story that was sent home earlier this week.

We started our new Guided Math Lessons this week. A Home School Connection letter was sent home earlier in the week. We will be spending quite a bit of time learning procedures and understanding terminology as well as what to do during guided math lessons. This week we learned our signals, what to do with timers, and how to work appropriately in math stations. We will continue working on learning how to read, write, and count numbers up to five. Please work on one to one correspondence with your child. This is counting an object and saying “one”, then moving to the next object and saying “two”. We have been practicing orally counting to 20 and focusing in on saying the “teen” number correctly. (Thirteen, fourteen, fifteen.)

In Social Studies we continue to learn about and review our SPARTY rules. We are working on being a good citizen and following rules. Everyone has done a great job so far! J

Be sure to take out, cut apart and practice recognizing the sight words that were placed in the first plastic sleeve of the daily folder. We will be working on words in school as well. I will begin checking sight word lists in the next few weeks.

Tomorrow, Friday, September 7th will be a free dress down day for all students. Student may dress down in jeans/sweats or gym shorts with a Spartan or plain t-shirt. Please let me know if you have questions. Weather permitting, we will be going to Spartan Stadium for the re-scheduled Pep Rally.
