Week of April 22nd-26th

Our Reading story for the week is “This Is the Way We Go to School!”. Our question of the week is: How do children around the world go to school? The Amazing Words for this story are: cable car, horse-and-buggy, Metro line, trolley, skis, vaporetto. The high frequency words are: where, come. The text based comprehension skill is draw conclusions. We will listen for /y/ spelled Yy and /kw/ spelled Qu. Please practice reading the “Run, Tim” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we will take our Measurement assessment. Please look for it to be signed and returned mid-week. We will begin our Money unit tomorrow.  Please continue counting to 100 by 1’s, 10’s and 5’s. Additionally, we have been counting to 20 by 2’s.

In Science, we will continue our unit on living and non-living things.

             The Basket Raffle will be held on Saturday and Sunday in the NSE gym. Students who donated towards our basket will receive a coupon for a prize drawing and can have a free dress down this Friday, April 26th. The coupon will be stapled to this newsletter if your child donated to our basket.

Week of April 15th-18th

Our Reading story for the week is “On the Move!”. Our question of the week is: How do people in different parts of the world travel? The Amazing Words for this story are: travel, llama, submarine, kayak, dogsled, double-decker bus. The high frequency words are: where, come. The text based comprehension skill is main idea. We will listen for /v/ spelled Vv and /z/ spelled Zz. Please practice reading the “Val’s Top” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we will be learning to tell time! Kindergarten students are expected to tell time to the hour. Last Friday, we made clocks to be kept at home to practice telling time. J We will use the vocabulary words: minute hand, hour hand, “o’clock”, digital and analog.  Please continue counting to 100 by 1’s, 10’s and 5’s. Additionally, we have been counting to 20 by 2’s.

In Science, we will continue our unit on living and non-living things. We will learn about Spring weather and incorporate the five senses.

            Report Cards were sent home last week. If you have not returned the report card envelope, please do so right away.

Week of April 8-12th

Our Reading story for the week is “The Little Engine that Could”. Our question of the week is: What kind of work do trains do? The Amazing Words for this story are: engine, passenger, mountain, tracks, roundhouse, valley. The high frequency words are: what, said, was. The text based comprehension skill is plot. We will listen for /u/ spelled Uu. Please practice reading the “Jan and Gus” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we will continue our unit on Time, Data, and Measurement. J We have been working on using the vocabulary words long, longer, longest and short, shorter, shortest. Please continue counting to 100 by 1’s, 10’s and 5’s. Additionally, we have been counting to 20 by 2’s.

In Science, we will learn about living and non-living things. Also, we will discuss Earth Day and how we can contribute to helping take care of the Earth.

            Report Cards will go home this Wednesday. Please be sure to sign and return the envelope only. You may keep the report card at home.

Graduation Picture Reminder

Graduation pictures will be taken this Thursday, April 4th.  All students will be photographed and will need to wear a white-collared shirt.  There is not a make-up day so please try to have your child at school Thursday and on time as pictures are taken first thing in the morning. Money and envelope packages are due Thursday but can be sent in tomorrow. If you do not wish to purchase pictures, please send a note so we are not searching for an envelope.

Week of April 1st-5th

Our Reading story for the week is “Trucks Roll!!”. Our question of the week is: What kinds of transportation help people do their jobs? The Amazing Words for this story are: trailers, haul, truckers, cabs, steering wheel, headlight. The high frequency words are: what, said, was. The text based comprehension skill is compare and contrast. We will listen for /u/ spelled Uu. Please practice reading the “Fun for Jud” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we will begin our unit on Time, Data, and Measurement. J Please continue counting to 100 by 1’s, 10’s and 5’s. Additionally, we have been counting to 20 by 2’s.

Kindergarten Graduation pictures will be taken this Thursday, April 4th. All students should wear a white collared shirt. Students will have pictures taken in a cap and gown with the collared shirt folded over the gown. Please be sure to send in the graduation picture package that was sent home last week. J
