Week of October 29th-Nov. 2nd    

Our Reading story for the week is “Animal Babies in Grasslands”. Our question of the week is: What special animals live in grasslands? The Amazing Words for this story are: calf, cub, joey, grassland, pup, foal. The high frequency words are: we, my, like. The text based comprehension skill is main idea. We will listen for /p/ spelled Pp at the beginning and end of a word. We will focus on the correct formation of Pp. Please practice reading the “Pat the Cat” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J Please be sure to practice letter naming and sight words daily. Use the flashcards that were enclosed in the plastic sleeve at the beginning of the school year to practice learning these words.

In Math, we will continue to sort and classify 2-D and 3-D shapes. So far, we have learned about a square, rectangle, triangle, and circle, hexagon, rhombus, trapezoid, and oval. Please practice number fluency each night as well as writing numbers 0-10.

A Leaf Observation Paper came home today. Please find a fall leaf and attach it to the paper. Complete the items on the observation paper and return it to school by Friday. You can send it in sooner if you would like. If your leaf is very dry, you may send it in a zip-loc bag.  We will share and display our projects in school. I am looking forward to this fun Fall project.

Please be sure to exchange the extra clothing that was sent home 2 weeks ago. I sent it home for you to replace it with seasonally appropriate dress code clothing. Also, please be sure your child has a sweater or quarter zip they can put on throughout the day.

Week of October 23rd-26th   

Our Reading story for the week is “Nature Spy”. Our question of the week is: What can we learn about nature when we look closely? The Amazing Words for this story are: discover, spy, pod, nature, acorn, pattern. The high frequency words are: have, is. The text based comprehension skill is setting. We will listen for /s/ spelled Ss at the beginning and end of a word. We will focus on the correct formation of Ss. Please practice reading the “Sock Sack” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J Please be sure to practice letter naming and sight words daily. Use the flashcards that were enclosed in the plastic sleeve at the beginning of the school year to practice learning these words.

In Math, we will continue to sort and classify 2-D and 3-D shapes. So far, we have learned about a square, rectangle, triangle, and circle. We know how to count the edges or side and where to find the vertices on these shapes. Today we introduced a trapezoid, rhombus, hexagon, and oval.  We used the vocabulary words: sides, vertices or corners, and straight or curvy lines. Please practice number fluency each night as well as writing numbers 0-10.

In Science this week, we will finish our lessons on pumpkins. We will be labeling the parts of a pumpkin and doing a pumpkin exploration.

Week of October 15th-19th  

Our Reading story for the week is “Flowers”. Our question of the week is: How are flowers unique? The Amazing Words for this story are: seeds, fruits, buds, stem, bloom, petals. The high frequency words are: have, is. The text based comprehension skill is compare and contrast. We will listen for /a/ spelled Aa at the beginning and middle of a word. We will focus on the correct formation of Aa. Please practice reading the “I Have!” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J Please be sure to practice letter naming and sight words daily. All students were tested on sight words last week. Be sure to check your child’s folder to see what list they have completed. Please use the flashcards that were enclosed in the plastic sleeve at the beginning of the school year to practice learning these words.

In Math, we will continue to sort and classify 2-D and 3-D shapes. Last week, we learned about a triangle and square. We used the vocabulary words: sides, vertices or corners, and straight or curvy lines. Please practice number fluency each night as well as writing numbers 0-10.

In Science, we will continue discussing the seasons and focusing in on changes in Fall. We will learn about the lifecycle of a pumpkin this week as we did not get to it last week.

There will be a brief Fall Festival planning meeting today, October 15th at 5:00.  Anyone who plans on attending should meet in front of the school store.

Our Reading story for the week is “Dig, Dig, Digging!”. Our question of the week is: How do machines help people work? The Amazing Words for this story are: scooping, squelching, spinning, swooshing, gobbling, rumbling. The high frequency words are: a, to. The text based comprehension skill is classifying and categorizing. We will listen for /t/ spelled Tt at the beginning or end of a word. We will focus on the correct formation of Tt. Please practice reading the “Tam!” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we will begin Unit 6, Sorting and Classifying 2-D and 3-D shapes. Please see the Home School Connection letter sent in the folder today.

In Science, we will continue discussing the seasons and focusing in on changes in Fall. In Social Studies, we will learn about Fire Safety.

The FIELD TRIP to Rohrbach’s Farm has been cancelled due to the wet weather. More information about rescheduling or planning a field trip later in the year will come home soon.

Week of October 1st-5th

Our Reading story for the week is “Smash! Crash!”. Our question of the week is: What do you like to do with your friends? The Amazing Words for this story are: signals, proper, perfect, dud, pirates, fabulous. The high frequency words are: a, to. The text based comprehension skill is character. We will listen for /m/ spelled Mm at the beginning or end of a word. We will focus on the correct formation of Mm. Please practice reading the “Little Mouse!” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math we will continue working on learning how to read, write, identify and count numbers 6-10. We will have the assessment for Unit 1 this week. Look for the sign and return stamp! J Please practice correct number formation for numbers 0-10.

In Science we will continue discussing the seasons and focusing in on changes in Fall.  

If you have not returned the FALL FESTIVAL $3.00 donation yet, please do so right away as the committee is trying to plan this fun day.
