Week of April 30th-May 4th

This week in Reading we will begin the story Building with Dad. The question we will focus on is: What are different ways of building? This story is an informational fiction and we will be focusing on the text based comprehension skill of compare and contrast. Our phonics skill is /a/ spelled Aa and /i/ spelled Ii. Our high frequency words are: here, with, do, what, little.

This week in Math we will begin Topic 11, Decomposing Numbers 11 to 19. We will learn to create number sets to 19 and learn parts of numbers 11-19. Please continue practicing counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens as well as writing numbers 0 to 20.

Our class took some of the end of the year Kindergarten testing which was administered by the Title 1 teachers last week. I have not yet received the results on the ten-minute writing test but as I was walking around during the test I noticed a huge improvement. Thank you for working with your child! J This Thursday, students will take the Math DIBELS test. They will be asked to identify as many numbers, out of order, as possible, tell the quantity that is bigger when looking at both sides of a domino, and tell the number that would come next when looking at a flash card.

Week of April 23rd-27th

This week in Reading we will begin the story This Is the Way We Go to School! The question we will focus on is: How do children around the world get to school? This story is an informational fiction and we will be focusing on the text based comprehension skill of drawing conclusions. Our phonics skill is /y/ spelled Yy and /kw/ spelled qu. This week in Math we will continue with Topic 10, Composing Numbers 11 to 19. We will learn to make the numbers 11-19 as well as write number sentences for the numbers 11-20. Our topic 10 test will be on Friday. J Please continue practicing counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens as well as writing numbers 0 to 20.

Please continue to practice writing as many possible words in ten minutes. The goal is to get approximately 30 words written correctly. Two and three letter words that are sight words or word families are the easiest to remember. Remember repeat words, backwards letters, and illegible letter or words will not be counted. Students will also be asked to write two sentences. Review punctuation, spacing, and sounding out words. Our class will be getting tested this Thursday so please continue to practice. J

Week of April 16th-20th

This week in Reading we will begin the story On the Move! The question we will focus on is: How do people in different parts of the world travel? This story is an informational text and we will be focusing on the text based comprehension skill of main idea. Our phonics skill is /v/ spelled Vv and /z/ spelled Zz. Our high frequency words are: where, come

This week in Math we will continue with Topic 9, Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10. We will learn to make the numbers 4-10 as well as write number sentences for the numbers 4-10. Our topic 9 test will be on Wednesday. J Please continue practicing counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens as well as writing numbers 0 to 20.

On Friday, a timed writing words assessment and explanation was sent home. We will be practicing writing as many words as we can in ten minutes. An average goal is 30 words. I will be sending these home so you can see how your child is doing. Be sure to practice this at home as well. Using word families and changing a vowel is an easy way to think of more words quickly.

Week of April 9th-13th

This week in Reading we will begin the story The Little Engine That Could. The question we will focus on is: What kind of work do trains do? This story is a classic fantasy and we will be focusing on the text based comprehension skill of plot. Our phonics skill is /u/ spelled Uu. Our high frequency words are: what, said, was.

This week in Math we will continue with Topic 9, Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10. We will learn to make the numbers 4-10 as well as write number sentences for the numbers 4-10. Please continue practicing counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens as well as writing numbers 0 to 20.

It is not too late to send in an auction basket donation. Our class theme is “Summer Time Pool Fun”. Our basket looks great. Thank you to all for the wonderful donations! J The auction will be held this Saturday and Sunday at NSE’s gym. There are some really great prizes and some baskets set aside strictly for NSE students. Hope to see you there.
