Week of September 10^th-14^th  

Our Reading story for the week is “We Are So Proud”. Our question of the week is: How do school children work and play together? The Amazing Words for this story are: proud, cooperation, float, preparation, creation, guide. The high frequency words are: I, am. The text based comprehension skill is setting. We will learn about syllables and review rhyming for phonological awareness skills. We will identify the letters Ff-Nn. Please practice reading the “Am I?” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math we will continue to learn signals, timers, and procedures that will help our guided Math small group time run smoothly. We will continue working on learning how to read, write, and count numbers up to five. Please work on one to one correspondence with your child. This is counting an object and saying “one”, then moving to the next object and saying “two”.

In Science, we will begin our topic of The Nature of Science. We will learn about questions, observations, how to share what you observe, and safety.

Sight word testing for LIST 1 will begin towards the end of this week and/or beginning of next week. Be sure to take out, cut apart and practice recognizing the sight words that were placed in the first plastic sleeve of the daily folder. We will be working on words in school as well.

Upcoming important dates:

·         9/10 School Store Begins The school store will begin today. Kindergarten will shop on a Monday. Students do not need a lot of money for the store. Students must go to school store right away.

·         9/10 NSE PTO Meeting 6:30 It is $5.00 to join and you must have clearances in order to participate in school activities that occur during the year. Please visit the PTO Facebook Page at North Schuylkill Elementary PTO. It is typically updated weekly with important information.

·         9/12 Hearing Screenings for grades K-2

·         9/14 Picture Day Feel free to return the picture packet that was sent home Friday and I will keep it in the classroom. Students must follow the dress code for pictures. All students will get their picture taken.

·         9/20 District Bon Fire at 7:30

·         9/21NSE PAID Dress Down There is no longer a dress down on 9/14 due to pictures being taken.

Monday is Day 10-Computers, Tuesday is Day 1-Art, Wednesday is Day 2-Guidance, Thursday is Day 3-Gym, and Friday is Day 4 Music.

Week of September 4^th-7^th

Our Reading story for the week was “The Little School Bus”. Our question of the week is: How do children get to school? The Amazing Words for this story are: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth. The high frequency words are: I, am. The text based comprehension skill we worked on was character. Rhyming was the phonological awareness skill. We worked on identifying the letters Aa-Ee. Please practice reading the “I Am” decodable story that was sent home earlier this week.

We started our new Guided Math Lessons this week. A Home School Connection letter was sent home earlier in the week. We will be spending quite a bit of time learning procedures and understanding terminology as well as what to do during guided math lessons. This week we learned our signals, what to do with timers, and how to work appropriately in math stations. We will continue working on learning how to read, write, and count numbers up to five. Please work on one to one correspondence with your child. This is counting an object and saying “one”, then moving to the next object and saying “two”. We have been practicing orally counting to 20 and focusing in on saying the “teen” number correctly. (Thirteen, fourteen, fifteen.)

In Social Studies we continue to learn about and review our SPARTY rules. We are working on being a good citizen and following rules. Everyone has done a great job so far! J

Be sure to take out, cut apart and practice recognizing the sight words that were placed in the first plastic sleeve of the daily folder. We will be working on words in school as well. I will begin checking sight word lists in the next few weeks.

Tomorrow, Friday, September 7^th will be a free dress down day for all students. Student may dress down in jeans/sweats or gym shorts with a Spartan or plain t-shirt. Please let me know if you have questions. Weather permitting, we will be going to Spartan Stadium for the re-scheduled Pep Rally.

Week of August 27^th-31^st

We are off to a fantastic start in Kindergarten! We have already made new friends and learned school rules. We are working on learning our SPARTY rules and trying our best to follow them. We had our first fire drill and did very well. Super job Kindergarten! J

A few notes: Please remember to label your child’s lunch and snack. Work on learning student id numbers and even practice typing it on a calculator. Every Friday, students are permitted to wear dress code bottoms with a Spartan t-shirt. Be sure to check both pockets of the daily folder. Tomorrow we will attend the district Pep Rally in Spartan Stadium. This will be a fun experience for Kindergarten. All students are permitted to dress down in a Spartan t-shirt with dress code bottoms or gym shorts.

Week of May 29^th-June 1^st

This week in Reading we will begin the story The House That Tony Lives In. The question we will focus on is: Who helps to build a house? This story is informational fiction and we will be focusing on the text based comprehension skill of setting. Our phonics skill is a letter review a decoding words. Our high frequency words are: review all words.

This week in Math we will finish with Topic 12, Measurement. We will learn to describe objects by more than one attribute, compare by length, weight, and height as well as compare capacities. Please continue practicing counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens as well as writing numbers 0 to 20.

We all had a blast at the Carnival on Friday! Thank you to our amazing PTO and wonderful parent volunteers for organizing it. J

In your child’s folder you will find their graduation recognition certificate and class composite.  Throughout this week, things will be coming home that we no longer need in our desks. Please be sure to check folders and backpacks daily and keep these items at home.

Week of May 21^st-25^th

This week in Reading we will begin the story Alistair and Kip’s Great Adventure. The question we will focus on is: What can friends build together? This story is an animal fantasy and we will be focusing on the text based comprehension skill of plot. Our phonics skill is /u/ spelled Uu. Our high frequency words are: for, my, of, we, yellow.

This week in Math we will continue with Topic 12, Measurement. We will learn to describe objects by more than one attribute, compare by length, weight, and height as well as compare capacities. Please continue practicing counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens as well as writing numbers 0 to 20.

We have quite a busy week in Kindergarten. Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 22^nd will be Kindergarten Graduation in the high school auditorium! Graduation will begin at 1pm with the doors opening at 12:45pm. Students should wear a white colored shirt and girls should wear their hair down for their cap to fit. Please refer to the blue cover sheet that was attached to your graduation tickets for all other important information.

The school Carnival will be held this Friday, May 25^th! Students may dress in gym clothes for this fun day. Please send in a water bottle with your child. Also, please apply sunscreen and if you would like send in sunscreen to be reapplied during the day. This will be such a fun day! J Please note, Carnival Day is not a rotation day.

In your child’s folder you will find their DIBELS results for the year. I am so pleased with the improvements we have made since January. Way to go! We will be having a pizza party next week to celebrate our accomplishments. J

Week of May 14^th-18th

This week in Reading we will begin the story Building Beavers. The question we will focus on is: How do beavers build their homes? This story is an informational text and we will be focusing on the text based comprehension skill of main idea. Our phonics skill is /e/ spelled Ee. Our high frequency words are: the, like, was, from, to.

This week in Math we will begin with Topic 12, Measurement. We will learn to describe objects by more than one attribute, compare by length, weight, and height as well as compare capacities. Please continue practicing counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens as well as writing numbers 0 to 20.

We will be taking Reading DIBELS on Wednesday. Please make sure your child practices reading nonsense words from the sheet that was sent home last week. Be sure to work on quickly naming letters and segmenting words into their sounds as well. We have been working on these skills for quite some time and I would like to see all students do the best they can. J

This week in Reading we will begin the story Old MacDonald Had a Woodshop. The question we will focus on is: What tools do you need to build things? This story is an animal fantasy and we will be focusing on the text based comprehension skill of character. Our phonics skill is /o/ spelled Oo. Our high frequency words are: where, that, is, come, go

This week in Math we will continue with Topic 11, Decomposing Numbers 11 to 19. We will learn to create number sets to 19 and learn parts of numbers 11-19. Please continue practicing counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens as well as writing numbers 0 to 20.

Our Book Fair shopping day was today. Your child may shop any day this week in the morning if they did not have book fair money today.
