Week of February 11^th-15^th

Our Reading story for the week is “My Lucky Day”. Our question of the week is: What is a lucky adventure? The Amazing Words for this story are: piglet, lucky, cook, fox, filthy, scrubber. The high frequency words are: are, that, do. The text based comprehension skill is cause and effect. We will listen for /l/ spelled Ll. Please practice reading the “Lad and Me” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we will continue with our next unit, Addition. We will use the vocabulary words: join, sum, and equal. Please see the Home/School Connection page that was sent home today. Continue to practice counting to 100  by 1’s, 10’s and 5’s. J

In Science, we will begin our Physical Science Unit. In this unit, we will learn about our five senses and what objects are made of as well as sorting and using objects.

We will have a Valentine’s Day party on Friday, Feb. 15^th at 2pm. Students will exchange cards and play a game or two and have some special treats. Students will need 18 total Valentine’s for our class. Please only fill in the “from” section on the card as it makes handing them out run much more smoothly. Thank You for your help with this! J Students are welcome to send in their Valentine’s earlier than Friday.

Week of February 4^th-8^th     

          

Our Reading story for the week is “Rooster’s Off to See the World”. Our question of the week is: What can we learn from our adventures? The Amazing Words for this story are: world, trip, journey, lonely, horizon, homesick. The high frequency words are: are, that, do. The text based comprehension skill is sequence. We will listen for /h/ spelled Hh. We will focus on the correct formation of Hh. Please practice reading the “I Have” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we will finish our unit on comparing numbers and take the assessment. Please be sure to continue working on identifying and writing the numbers 0-20. Practice counting to 100  by 1’s, 10’s and 5’s. J

In Science we will discuss Groundhog Day and learn about shadows while relating them to the Earth and Sun.  

Report Cards are enclosed in your child’s folder today! Be sure to sign the envelope and RETURN to school tomorrow. You may KEEP the report card at home. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns with your child’s progress. Additionally, I noticed some Fall pictures were left in the report card envelope from the last marking period. Be sure to double check your envelope. J

The 100^th Day of School will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 6^th. Students are invited to dress as if they are 100 years old. Please refer to the note about dressing up that was previously sent home.

Week of January 14^th-18^th            

Our Reading story for the week is “Then and Now”. Our question of the week is: How are things we use today different from things used long ago? The Amazing Words for this story are: gears, headphones, webcams, handwritten, phonographs, newspapers. The high frequency words are: they, you, of. The text based comprehension skill is drawing conclusions. We will listen for /o/ spelled Oo. We will focus on the correct formation of Oo. Please practice reading the “Little Rob” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we are working on comparing numbers. We will continue to use the vocabulary words: compare, greater, less, fewer, more. Please be sure to continue working on identifying and writing the numbers 0-20.

In Science we will learn about the Earth and Sky and answer the question: What are the Earth and sky like?

This Thursday, January 17^th, our class will be taking the middle of the year Reading Dibels assessment. Students will be timed one minute for each part of the assessment. They will be asked to name letters quickly, say the first sound of a given word, read or sound out nonsense words and segment words into their sounds. Today I sent home a packet for you to help your child prepare for this week’s test. Once I have the Reading scores I will send home both Reading and Math middle of the year scores.

Once again our school is participating in Boosterthon! This is a fun fundraising effort to benefit the PTO and our school! Please be sure to sign your child up if you have not done so yet. Simply go to boosterthon.com and follow the prompts. Prior to the actual fun run there will be daily “huddles” where students will learn about character traits and be given their prizes for getting donations. Please keep in mind this fundraiser gives back to our school and students!

Our Reading story for the week is “Farfallina and Marcel”. Our question of the week is: What happens when animals change? The Amazing Words for this story are: goose, caterpillar, reflection, gosling, butterfly, cocoon. The high frequency words are: see and look. The text based comprehension skill is plot. We will listen for /f/ spelled Ff. We will focus on the correct formation of Ff. Please practice reading the “For Me” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we are working on comparing numbers. We will use the vocabulary words: compare, greater, less, fewer, more. Please be sure to continue working on identifying and writing the numbers 0-20.

In Science we will learn about all things winter! We will chart winter as a season and learn about penguins. J

This Thursday, January 10^th, our class will be taking the middle of the year Math Dibels screener assessment. Students will be timed one minute for each part of the assessment. They will be asked to name numbers, out of order, to 100. They will be asked what the next number is after a given number. Last, they will be shown two sets of dots in the form of a domino or dice and asked which quantity is larger and how many dots there are for that group. I have sent home practice pages for you. We have been working on these skills in school too!

Week of December 17^th-21^st          

We will be doing a review in Reading this week! Please practice words lists in the folder!

In Math, we will finish our Unit, Numbers 11-20. We will take the test on Wednesday. Be sure to practice counting, reading and writing all numbers 0-20. Students should be able to tell me a number from 0-20 and use a twenty frame to build that number. Additionally, students should be able to write the given number.

In Social Studies, we will continue to discuss holidays around the world. We have learned about the traditions and celebrations for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. We will finish learning about Las Posadas and Christmas.  

This week your child will be bringing home gifts and projects. Please be on the lookout for them. I hope you enjoy everything. Today, we made reindeer food for Santa’s reindeer. Be sure to sprinkle it outside on Christmas Eve night. J

Week of December 10^th-14^th          

Our Reading story for the week is “Little Quack”. Our question of the week is: What new things can you do as you get older? The Amazing Words for this story are: duckling, paddle, proud, pond, plunged, brave. The high frequency words are: me, with, she. The text based comprehension skill is plot. We will listen for /r/ spelled Rr. We will focus on the correct formation of Rr. Please practice reading the “Rin the Rat” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J

In Math, we will continue Numbers 11-20. We will continue using a twenty frame to build numbers 0-20 and practice writing numbers to twenty correctly.

In Social Studies, we will continue to discuss holidays around the world. We have learned about the traditions and celebrations for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. We will soon learn about Las Posadas and Christmas.

Today we mailed our letters to Santa. We had special mail carriers come to the school today. Each child placed a special stamp on their letter to Santa and mailed it to the North Pole. J

Week of December 3^rd-7^th         

Our Reading story for the week is “Little Panda”. Our question of the week is: How does a panda change in its first year of life? The Amazing Words for this story are: weigh, healthy, curious, measure, bamboo, explore. The high frequency words are: me, with, she. The text based comprehension skill is compare and contrast. We will listen for /n/ spelled Nn and /b/ spelled Bb. We will focus on the correct formation of Nn and Bb. Please practice reading the “Nan and Nat” decodable story. *Each decodable story can be recorded for the monthly Reading Logs. J Here are a few things we have been working on in school that you can continue to practice at home:

·         Rapidly name as many letters as possible in 1 minute. (Goal is about 35-40.)

·         Say the first sound in a word. Ex: You say “what is the first sound in fish?”, child should say /f/.

·         Segment words into sounds. Ex: You say, “tell me the sounds in fish.”, child should say /f/ /i/ /sh/. We have been practice using our body to help us for beginning, middle and end. Students should know to use their head, shoulders, and waist to help say sounds in words.

In Math, we will continue Numbers 11-20. Here are a few things we have been working on in school that you can continue to practice at home:

·         Count to 100 every night. Be sure to count the “teen” numbers correctly.

·         Ask your child the next number. Ex: You say 23, your child should say 24. You say 66, your child should say 67. Do this multiple times for numbers to 100.

·         Show two dice or dominoes and have your child tell the greater number and what it is. Your child should be able to point and quickly tell you how many dots there are for the greater number.

·         Identify numbers 0-100.

In Social Studies, we will discuss our world around us and begin to learn about holidays around the world.

Our holiday gift shop day will Wednesday. Please refer to the red paper that was sent home last week.
